Games back on menu at McDonald's McDonald's Corp. is poised to launch its first promotional game since a rogue employee of a marketing agency stole $13 million in game pieces over several years. This time, however, the fast-food giant, which was shaken by the scandal, is armed with a new security procedure that includes outside auditors. French chefs fall out over suicide row France's best-known restaurateur Alain Ducasse has resigned from the organisation that represents the country's top chefs in protest against remarks by its president blaming food-writers for the suicide of one of their colleagues, Ducasse's office said Thursday. Ducasse was angry at a letter sent to 70 members by Jacques Pourcel, head of the Union of French Haute Cuisine (CSHCF), in which he said it was "unacceptable for guidebooks or journalists to push gifted men into such a state of confusion that they kill themselves." In Asia, struggling McDonald's tries rice A young couple settles in for lunch at McDonald's. On the menu: rice, veggies and curry pork. This is not the burger-and-fries restaurant founded by Ray Kroc. But it's one of the ways in which the world's largest restaurant chain is struggling to climb out of what is perhaps the biggest financial crisis in its 48-year history. Pizzerias work to get bigger slice of pie Here's the commercial Brian Kovelman sometimes dreams about producing: A customer walks into a pizza restaurant and gets an eight-cut pizza. The guy behind the counter says the cost is $8, but for one more dollar, the customer could have a 12-cut pie. The customer agrees. The counter guy pulls out a pizza slicer, runs it across the pizza twice, and pushes the pie back to the customer. "That'll be $9, please." 'Hey Waitress!' Alison Owings, an oral historian, has spent seven years researching and writing her book, "Hey Waitress! The USA from the Other Side of the Tray." She interviewed scores of women -- young and old, tall and short, beautiful and plain, educated or not -- because she wanted to explore an understudied profession. She found waitresses to be "overlooked, underheard, and underappreciated" but with a lot to say. Restaurant Empire goes gold Enlight Software has today announced that Restaurant Empire has gone gold and is now being prepared to ship to retail next month. In the game, players assume the role of a young chef who's attempting to make a success of his uncle's restaurant so he can then go into competition with the powerful OmniFood restaurant conglomerate by building an empire of his own. The great pizza dilemma It's one of the most daunting tasks mankind will face in his journey through life. Many will choose to repeatedly face this hurdle, only to fail miserably time and time again. The strongest of men quiver in fear at its mere mention. The most cunning of women are quickly felled by its unpredictability. I am talking, of course, of ordering a pizza. This ever-popular comfort food is interpreted by top chefs Whether it's called soul food, comfort food, low country, southern, new southern, or Caribbean, cuisines with an African-American heritage have made their way out of grandma's kitchen and onto the white tablecloths of fine restaurants. Dishes such as fried chicken, grits, macaroni and cheese and fried green tomatoes have always been staples in the South's home kitchens, but celebrities and top chefs have given them a makeover in the past decade. Restaurant trains handicapped There's more behind the counter than meets the eye at the Mercantile Restaurant. Customers who tuck into the bacon and egg breakfasts, chicken breasts, liver, fish fries or meat loaf are feeding more than their own hunger. They're also helping the handicapped train for work in the food industry. Two firebombs left at restaurant An international radical animal rights group may be responsible for planting two firebombs behind a Chico McDonald's restaurant early Monday morning. "Meat is Murder" and "Animal Liberation Front" was scrawled in red spray-paint across the outside of the building. Don't blame the top restaurant guide for a French chef's suicide Reacting to the suicide last Monday of fellow culinary kingpin Bernard Loiseau, Paul Bocuse and other top French chefs skipped the shock and went straight for the scapegoating, blaming his death on merciless, mercurial critics. They claimed Loiseau's recent demotion by GaultMillau, a popular restaurant guide, led him to make a date with the business end of his rifle. But the principal object of their ire was the all-powerful Michelin Guide, whose coveted stars can make or break a restaurant (the loss of a star will generally cut a restaurant's turnover by at least 25 percent). Has McDonald's lost appetite for profit? Until recently, McDonald’s has appeared to be an unstoppable force, changing the eating habits of the world from Moscow to Beijing, Bombay to Paris. Ronald McDonald, the firm’s corporate clown with the shock of scarlet hair, is the second-most recognisable figure to children after Santa Claus. But today, the Golden Arches are under siege. Since the company revealed its first loss in 37 years as a public company it seems the world has been lining up to take a malevolent bite out of the Big Mac.
