Back in 1904, Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov won the Nobel Prize for his work regarding "associative response." Day after day, Pavlov would ring a bell as he fed meat to hungry dogs. Eventually, the dogs began to salivate at the sound of the bell. Humans work the same way. The trick, of course, is to tie the new to the known. Just like Pavlov tied the sound of a bell to the dog's love of meat, you need to tie your product or service to an emotional reaction. Are you the best? The cheapest? The fastest? What makes you unique? In plain English, if marketing is "getting your name out there," branding is what you attach to your name. marketing products & services Need better search engine listings? Sales Ails? Have you ever seen something on sale... meant to buy it, and then forgotten about the sale until it was over? You, too? Know why that happens? The human mind catalogs information either in short term memory or in long term memory. Short term memory allows us to remember a phone number long enough to dial it or write it down. Once you've dialed that number repeatedly, (repetition) it will be transferred to long term memory. By the same token, when people are exposed to your business repeatedly, it will eventually be transferred to long term memory. With one exception. The human mind seldom transfers a "short term" message to long term memory. So, when you say, "Sale - one week only," or "Offer Expires ..." the human mind flags that message as "short term" - and doesn't transfer it to long term memory. That's why "discount sale!" doesn't help if you're looking for name recognition or branding. Come to think of it, have you ever "waited" for something to go on sale, because you know it will? That's what discount sales do very effectively - teach the consumer not to pay full price because another sale will come around. Can you hear your profits saying ouch?
