my friends say i am stubborn - they're right, i am am, but those same friends who used to encourage me to 'give up', started turning to me for guidance when life started to get to them too.

enough of the 'cheerleading', let's get down to some solid information. along the way i discovered there are a variety of easy ways to survive and thrive, and for the most part they are all simple enough to implement and don't require a degree in nuclear physics. in fact, i've found the simpler the solution the better it is.

so armed with this knowledge that 'simpler is better' we can continue.

find a need, and fill it...

such a simple statement - so profound, yet so hard to do... it used to keep me up at nights. however it also happens to be bang on the money.

fast forward 100 years

fast food, the internet, cable tv, infomercials and the attention span of a butterfly. what an opportunity! what's that, you don't agree?

let me explain. i said earlier that the basic principle was 'find a need and fill it'. our needs are few, however our 'wants' are limitless. if someone thinks a 'want' is a 'need' then finding one is a whole lot easier. and guess what, there are companies out there spending millions to get people to think just that. hold that thought - you'll need it later on...

i promised you some answers...

okay, so back to your survival, i'll share with you some of what i've told many of my friends and colleagues over the years, and the fantastic news is that you've got all the tools you need to implement these easy solutions: you've got a computer, you've got an internet connection and i'm guessing you've got an email account or two.

now if we were talking - face to face - i'd suggest different strategies based on your circumstances. so what i am going to do is use an imaginary friend's problem as an example. let's call him joe.

joe has just lost his job. in fact he lost it last week. firsts things first - joe, don't panic!. we need to get an assessment of your current financial situation. what's that you say, you have no savings or investments, and you've only got enough money to make one more round of household bill payments before you start that slippery slope into bankruptcy...

okay joe, let's not go there.

just a regular joe

the first thing joe needs is to set up a system that immediately gives him some short term cash. how? well the quickest way i know of is to liquidate surplus asset: sell stuff. yup, when the chips are down you sell the tings that are not critical for survival. the problem with this is that if you took your stuff to a second-hand store you'd be lucky to get 50% of its value, and then they'd depreciate it more for current wear and tear.

joe, meet ebay

so how do you sell it for top-dollar? on ebay where else! the good news here is that you can list and sell items within minutes, although the normal time frame is about 7 days. you can even get paid with an online account like paypal if you're so inclined.

ebay is the single quickest way to get cash without getting squeezed on price because nobody meets you in person so nobody can sense how desperate you might be. people can sense these things and will often use it against you (not nice, but it's true).

what's that you say joe, you have nothing of value to sell. aw c'mon joe, you're not making this easy for me!

joe, meet google

all right joe, so you need to make money...and you have nothing to sell. well let me introduce you to google adwords.

you know what a search engine is don't you joe. well when somebody types in certain words they get search results: that's an identified need/want. so if you could find a way to match that need/want to a product you could sell it. i know of a place where there are quite literally hundreds of great products for sale. best of all you can sell them for free and they pay you a commission.

no joe, you don't have to buy these  products and stock pile them in your garage - they're digital! it's simple joe, set up your google adwords account and create keyword targeted 'classified adverts' that show up when people tell google what they 'want/need'. when they do, your advert shows up.

when the seeker clicks on your advert they get sent to the product website and the site does all the selling - you merely introduce sellers to buyers (it's called affiliate selling). what could be simpler?

you know joe, now that you've got things going on on ebay, and your promoting other peoples stuff on google, why not take it up a notch and start selling your own products.

what's that you say - you have no idea how to do that...

joe, everyone has something to share with people, everyone has a skill. even defeat and struggle have value when applied constructively.

what's that? you don't know how to select a niche? use overture and check out their keyword analysis tool - find keywords where the monthly number is over a few thousand, that means that there is a good chance you've found a niche...and don't forget to leverage what you know...

and as they say, "there's riches in niches!"
