i hated my job...
i was a salesman at a very well-known multi-national company, with a reputation for sound products and marketing, and reasonable after sales service. i had worked for them for a couple of years, basically going nowhere, despite attending the various training courses and doing all the cold calling i could stand. i really hated the job, and was getting pretty depressed and fed up.
then the penny dropped – the problem was that i really wasn’t interested in what i was selling, and was bored with the market place i was allowed to work in – basically very low end work in new account sales only, a typical salesperson’s graveyard in fact.
then i looked at colleagues in other divisions of the business. they were doing pretty well compared to us, and looked and talked ‘success’! their sales figures were high & these guys hit their targets regularly. what a difference!
‘right’, i thought. ‘this is where i need to be.’ so i applied to the manager of that division. to my relief, and i have to say thanks to him for this, he saw something in the frustrated kid that really needed a change for the better, and arranged for me to join his team.
now i was working for the professionals! we regularly made our targets, operating as a team, rather than a group of fed up guys who spent most of our time wondering how soon we would get fired. the individual sales values were way higher than anything i had sold before, and my salary doubled in the first year, and then went on to be almost 4 times what i had been earning.
all this meant my family could live in a decent house, with a father who was a lot happier with life, not worrying about when the axe would fall, but instead wondering where the next company bonus trip would take me.
i learned a couple of very important lessons
but more of those later...
after three years of this, i had built up a good track record in sales, and, from being a guy likely to wind up as yet another burned out salesperson, i now had a consistent track record of over-performance that made me a valuable commodity. but the future was looking less optimistic. i could see that i had pretty much gone as far as the management structure was going to let me, for the next 10-15 years at least. time to take stock again...
while analysing competition on our various training courses, i noticed that there were some fast rising stars out there that had solutions that made ours look pretty sick, to be honest. i remembered my self-taught lesson and thought ‘time to look a little more closely at some of these guys’.
i did the research, contacted an agency to find out what the market rate was like for someone with my (by now) established track record. wow! while i had been feeling pretty smug in my cosy little world, the market had been moving on fast.
i doubled my earnings overnight!
to cut a long story short, i did land the job i really wanted with the strongest and, to me, most interesting of our competitors. straight away i doubled my earnings. (to get this kind of money, my boss’s boss had been with my old company for 27 years and he was still paid less than i now was!)
little did i understand that this was where my education was really going to start. in the course of the next 8 years, working with some of the best people and trainers in the business, i went on to earn more than three times what i started on. i travelled all over the world, regularly winning many sales awards, and getting all the kudos that goes with being one of the 'top guns'. the rest, as they say, is history…
