introducing a "real world" must-read guide....
credit card debt: it can cost you your life
(lifesaving strategies to avoid debt)
don't let your child leave home without it!
money. something we all must make decisions with when we enter the real world. yet, no one teaches you how to do just that or how to demonstrate positive money management skills.
i know. i've been there. at 23, i opened my first credit card. at 25, i had five credit cards and close to $9,000 debt. my income was barely $25,000/year. barely able to pay my bills, i found myself financially and emotionally devastated when my job came to a screeching halt and i was laid-off. in trouble i'd never known before, i wanted to blame everyone for my situation - my parents for not teaching me about money, the credit card companies for profiting from my financial struggles and myself for spending more than i could afford to repay.
at a young age, i discovered stress unlike anything i'd ever known before. i distinctly remember pleading with my mom. "why? why didn't you teach me about money, about credit cards?" i remember adamantly insisting that credit cards should be illegal, no one should be allowed to sink to the depths i'd sunk to.
well, credit cards are legal and not entirely bad, if you know what you're doing. if you don't, it takes no time to find yourself where i was. at 27, i started writing to tell young people everywhere what they need to be informed about: the dangers of credit cards and debt.
at 30, i offer you a book i wish i had when i was 19. this is the same response i've heard from hundreds of people, adults. business men and women, parents, local musicians, top chefs, people from all industries and backgrounds, i've heard over and over again, "where was this book before i started using credit cards?"
in writing this book, my initial reaction was to blame the mammoth credit card companies, but as i delved deeper in research, i discovered they are only part of the problem. we as consumers are a part of the problem, too. we know better than to to make decisiosn without solid information but most times, this is not the case with credit card use. credit cards don't come with directions or a user's guide and many people get involved only to quickly find themselves overwhelmed.
the book evolved then into teaching what you first need to know about money and how to demonstrate positive money management- and then profiles four people and the consequencers of debt on their lives. it goes on to break down all the information you need to be informed about credit card use- a user's guide, so to speak.
**when i speak to parents of soon-to-be college freshmen, i encourage them to have that "conversation" with their soon-to-be college freshman about money management. creating a budget, maintaining a checking account, balancing a bank statement, and that all important (to them) credit card! susan powell's book, credit card debt: it can cost you your life, is a must-read for parents and students alike. she includes real life examples, stages of credit card debt, importance of a good credit report, and step-by-step prevention of credit card debt. she creates awareness of the costs to carry debt. this book is the best education i have seen on how to manage your own finances. anyone can benefit from this book. it will help you become financially literate. |

this book i offer you exists to teach young people everywhere how to avoid costly mistakes with money and how to avoid the mostly costly of problems: credit card debt. inside, you'll find:
- a shocking look at how devastating credit card debt can be.
- a look at the actual impact of credit card debt on a person's future- including job searching and performance, self-esteem, rental/living situations, and much, much more.
- a close examination of the dangers of using credit cards without education
- a chapter devoted solely to defining all terms of a standard credit card offer and how these greatly impact an individual's debt-load.
young adults are a huge target for mammoth credit card companies because this age group lacks financial savvy to avoid getting in too deep with debt. no parent wants to think of their child struggling with debt & you certainly don't want to get stuck paying off thousands of dollars in credit card debt to alleviate the stress load that accompanies being in debt.
