i've suffered from ibs for about 5 years - from 1995 to 2000. i remember times when i had diarrhea so bad that it lasted for over two weeks without a break! and i didn't see my doctor. in fact, i hated going to my doctor. what a big mistake - by ignoring it, the problem just got worse. i'm sure at the time i thought i might be suffering from something more serious than ibs so rather than come to terms with that, i blocked it out of my mind. bloating and pain after eating seemed normal! there were other times when i was bloated for days on end. as i remember, i got to the stage where it seemed normal; i expected bloating and pain after eating! it happened so often that i just put up with it like an ache or pain that won't go away. and then the fatigue. most of the time i felt energy-less; always having to force myself to do things. sometimes were worse than others; especially in the mornings. sometimes i dreaded getting up in the morning. there were quite a few other symptoms as well. below is an extensive list of them. i had over ten different symptoms
my symptoms got worse and worse over a period of several years, my symptoms got worse and worse. i think the final straw was taking several courses of antibiotics for a suspected urine infection. after taking the antibiotics, all my symptoms got worse - the diarrhoea became chronic, the stomach and back pain increased dramatically, the groin pain was nearly constant, and i had shooting pains in my arms and lower back now! at this stage i seriously thought i had something very serious - possibly cancer. so i had to do something about it. eventually i saw four doctors, had numerous blood tests and physical examinations, and was even admitted to the local hospital. after more tests i was eventually diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and depression. eat more fiber and try to relax? my gp (general practitioner) advised me to eat more fiber and try to relax! needless to say, it didn't work. so i decided from that point on that i would get to know everything i can about ibs and then use that knowledge to beat it. i studied many ibs success stories, looking for common denominators, read dozens of books and thousands of articles. my 'breakthrough' in understanding irritable bowel syndrome most of the books and articles i read repeated the same old stuff: "ibs is a dysfunctional bowel, with no known cause or cure". reading this stuff again and again was depressing. but reading about people who beat ibs or reduced most of their symptoms was fascinating. i think this is what lead to my 'breakthrough' in understanding irritable bowel syndrome... my 'breakthrough' was not some amazing scientific discovery - unfortunately. it was a new way to look at ibs. if you are told that you have irritable bowel syndrome with no known cause or cure, how or where can you start to reduce your symptoms? how can you begin to tackle a 'syndrome'? for most people, being told they have a 'syndrome' is overwhelming and upsetting. after a tremendous amount of research, thinking and personal experimentation, i realized that my digestive was not diseased but strained. as mentioned above, my digestive system was struggling to digest the foods i was eating and the fluids i was drinking. how did i know it was struggling? because of the diarrhea, bloating, stomach pain, constipation, etc... this is why doctors and experts alike can only diagnose ibs after they have eliminated all other digestive diseases and disorders - because the digestive system is not diseased, but simply strained!! how can they diagnose a strained digestive system? after more research, research and research, i began to identify what foods, fluids and drugs could strain the digestive system and what digestive problems they could cause. i then researched each of these digestive problems and their typical symptoms...
i was shocked!!! there was no real mystery to ibs. there are a number of digestive problems that can cause ibs symptoms. help your digestive system overcome these digestive problems and the ibs symptoms systematically improve and ultimately disappear! after realizing this, i began to experiment and devise a program to help me beat my ibs. i studied all the digestive problems that could cause ibs symptoms and researched into ways of beating them. after following my program for a few weeks, my digestive system improved dramatically! and the more i followed the program the better my digestive became until i reached the stage of no ibs symptoms! now, today i'm totally free of ibs and feel great. while i had ibs, i felt absolutely terrible - tired and exhausted, drained, depressed, miserable and unhappy. but today, i'm feel the total opposite - happy, relaxed, focused, confident and in very good health. i don't have to worry about ibs anymore and nor should you! i don't have to worry about irritable bowel syndrome any more because i know what caused my ibs - strain from certain foods, fluids and drugs (which is in common with many other millions and millions of sufferers worldwide), and i will never make the same mistakes again. and the same goes for you, once you've taken the strain off your digestive system and helped to improve it, you won't make the same mistakes again! why? because who wants to go back to a life controlled and dominated by diarrhea, bloating, constipation, stomach cramps, abdominal pain, etc. ibs explained - learn more about your disorder irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder; it's not a disease like crohn's disease where the small intestine is inflamed. ibs sufferers is do not suffer from inflamed intestines, although the symptoms of ibs and crohn's (and other digestive disorders) can be very similar. ibs can only be described by its symptoms: persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, bloating, and possibly other symptoms but these are the main ones. a person is usually diagnosed with ibs if they have the above symptoms and no disease or other reason has been found for the disorder. it's important to realize that irritable bowel syndrome is only diagnosed after other disorders and diseases have been eliminated. so put simply, ibs is recurrent symptoms of diarrhea/constipation, abdominal pain, bloating where no ‘real disease' has been found. thus, ibs is a catch-all term for a number of possible digestive disorders. what are the typical symptoms of ibs sufferers? typical symptoms of ibs sufferers can be divided into two groups - primary and secondary.
stomach/abdominal pain: i've found via research and personal experience that there are two main sources of stomach/abdominal pain. the two sources are bowel spasm and increased digestive tract sensitivity or hypersensitivity. diarrhea: the diarrhea is caused by uncontrolled bowel spasm. when the bowel goes into spasm, stools are not properly formed and excess fluid is not absorbed leading to watery stools - diarrhea. constipation: there are number of possible causes of constipation including: altered digestive chemistry and intestinal flora, low fluid and fibre intake, loss of body salts, etc. bloating: bloating can be caused by trapped gas in the stomach or bowels. the gas is caused by undigested or partly digested food being fermented by bacteria or fungal overgrowth. another cause of bloating is bowel distention. if the bowel goes into spasm, it can ‘stick out’ giving the appearance or feeling of bloating. there’s only a small number of ways the digestive system (ds) can signal there’s a problem. these ways, or symptoms to be more precise, include diarrhea, bloating, pain, constipation. so these symptoms are a sign that there is a problem. so persistent symptoms are a sign of a recurrent problem.
