while officials said there is not credible, specific information with respect to targets or methods of attack, [homeland security secretary] tom ridge said in a written statement that recent attacks overseas underscore terrorists’ desires to attack soft targets [such as shopping malls, public events, and apartment houses] with methods such as suicide bombers or car bombs.

“weapons of mass destruction, including those containing chemical, biological or radiological agents or materials, cannot be discounted,” he said.

whether the next big terrorist attack in the u.s. occurs this week or months from now, it appears inevitable. as top u.s. officials from president bush on down have repeatedly declared, “it’s not a question of if terrorists will strike again, but when.”

if the terror alert is raised to red ...

it won’t even take a major terrorist attack to radically change your life. according to homeland security, a “red alert” would mean all non-essential workers would be ordered to stay at home. police and the military will take control of the highways and airports.

airlines and highways may be shut down, and travelers will probably be stuck for days, weeks or longer wherever they happen to be. if you were caught on the streets, you would be subject to immediate arrest and could even be shot.

what if there is a biological or chemical attack? unfortunately, that’s all too likely. last december, the cia confirmed that al qaeda had biochemical weapons and was working on a radiological “dirty bomb.”

if there is a biochemical, radiological or nuclear attack, america will be under martial law. under recently passed emergency legislation including the patriot act and homeland security act, the government will assume control of fuel supplies, power, medicines, and transportation.

it’s comforting to believe that the government can protect us from all of these threats. unfortunately, that’s dead wrong.

according to a 102-page report released by the justice department on may 14, 2003:

terror task forces are ill-prepared for the job... critical aspects of the nation's anti-terrorism strategy lack necessary resources, and law enforcement officials believe the centerpiece of the effort — a network of 66 federally managed anti-terrorism units — is “inadequate” to investigate threats.

as an open society, america is extremely vulnerable to terrorist attacks on our power plants, water supply, office buildings, food, and more. there is no way for the government to protect us from every possible attack, even if they sealed our borders and had an unlimited budget.
